The Oaks Golf Course at Tan-Tar-A

My Review

I enjoy playing The Oaks Golf Course at Tan-Tar-A at the Lake of the Ozarks and try to play it every time I am staying at Tan-Tar-A – or close by. Like most of the courses at the Lake, The Oaks is very hilly but the designer did a nice job of using the hills to the advantage of the player . . . as much as possible. It is a tough course though providing many challenges for golfers of all levels. And, the staff at The Oaks is very accommodating and, as with the entire Tan-Tar-A resort, they will do whatever possible to ensure that your experience is memorable. A special thanks to Paul Leahy and Spencer Wilson for opening their course and club house to MoGolfTour.

Hidden Lakes of Tan-Tar-A

My Review

Hidden Lakes of Tan-Tar-A is nice little 9-hole course, right in the Tan-Tar-A compound in the heart of Lake of the Ozarks. I wouldn’t go out of my way to play this course, but if I am staying at the hotel, I wouldn’t miss it. A reasonable test of skills and some very fun holes. Par 4’s are long; par 3’s are short.

The Club at Porto Cima

My Review

We rented a house in Porto Cima and played the The Club at Porto Cima at the Lake of the Ozarks a couple of times during the fall. During this time of year the course was almost breathtaking. It is a very difficult course because almost every hole is bordered by woods, so if you spray at all you are in the woods and your ball is likely lost. There is a premium for keeping your ball in the fairway. I think Porto Cima is one of the state’s best courses. . . maybe the best. It is designed by Jack Nicklaus. It is perfect in almost every way, but at this level, it is difficult to determine which is the best; each club has its strengths and weaknesses. To be the best you must be immaculately maintained, have a great design, great staff, etc. But, what Porto Cima has that very few courses in Missouri have is the views. Several holes border the lake so there are many stunning backdrops to already incredible holes. If you get the opportunity to play this club, do so.

Osage National Golf Resort

My Review

Designed by Arnie. I’ve played Osage National Golf Resort at the Lake of the Ozarks a few times over the years. It is a fun course to play with beautiful scenery. If you have choice, play the River and Mountain courses. The Mountain course is a must play. The most diverse and interesting holes are on this 9. I really enjoyed the Mountain course. I would recommend booking your tee time through one of the online sites, like GolfNow.com. We paid $105 on a Saturday and the pair we teamed up with paid something like $65 on GolfNow. Walkable course, except on the Mountain course, which has a 1/4 mile straight up hill walk between two holes. I would have had a heart attack if I had walked. I need to schedule a time to play this year so that I can update the pictures on this page.

Lodge of Four Seasons – The Ridge

My Review

Lodge of Four Seasons – The Ridge in Lake of the Ozarks, MO is a beautiful golf course and very well maintained. The backdrop, course design and grooming make this a top course in Missouri. The fairways are fairly wide but each hole is flanked by dense Ozark woods – so you will be punished for any massively errant shots. The greens are reasonably flat but the fairways have more mounds than a black slope at Breckenridge. It would be very difficult to ever get lost on this course because there is only one path that runs the length of the course. They have some excellent twilight rates which also makes this a very affordable course. The Par 5 17th hole falls into the Ozark abyss on the left and it very difficult to hold the fairway making a par a great score. Great course and great complement to the entire Ozark golfing arsenal.

Lodge of Four Seasons – The Cove

My Review

I always enjoy playing Lodge of Four Seasons – The Cove at the Lake of the Ozarks. Hilly and challenging course but also a lot of fun. The course is in beautiful condition and is one of the top tier courses at the Lake. If you are used to playing on one of the finer courses in the big city, you will likely lose a few more balls than usual here because of the close proximity of the woods to the fairways. But, that is what makes this a great course; it makes you pay for your errors. So, if you score well here you are well deserving. The club is run by a staff of wonderful representatives of the Lodge, including Matt Tausig, Director of Golf, at the Lodge.

WinterStone Golf Course

WinterStone Golf Course, Kansas City, Missouri Golf Courses

My Review

WinterStone Golf Course is absolutely a great public course, located in Kansas City. I think it is one of the best in Missouri and an excellent value. The greens, tees and fairway grasses are among the best in the state. The roughs are thick and lush but too long for my taste. Besides making it more difficult to find your ball, you will need to add one or two clubs distance for most balls out of the rough. As the assistant pro, Jeremey Bailey, said “Yep, they’re ‘healthy’.” Each of the of medium-sized greens are fast and are protected by a well-manicured large sand trap. WinterStone also has the widest cart paths I have seen which wind through the course and make it virtually impossible to get lost. WinterStone is another example of why KC boasts of the best public courses in the state. So far the tally is: Best Public Courses – Kansas City, followed by Branson. Best Private St. Louis.

Hodge Park Golf Club

My Review

I have not played Hodge Park Golf Club in Kansas City, MO for many years but I am now a big fan of the course. This course is definitely worth the drive from anywhere in the Kansas City area, particularly if you have not played it. All of the grasses are in wonderful condition. Regrettably, so are the areas of tall and thick natural grasses which come into play on nearly every hole. Not a lot of sand on the course, but the unique doglegs and course layout more than make up for it. The beautiful bentgrass greens are medium size with gradual breaks from almost every position. Do not let the low slope rating fool you. This course can play very difficult especially if you are not hitting straight.
