As I was preparing to head to the Kansas City area for MoGolfTour.com, I was asked by many people: “Are you going to play Stone Canyon Golf Club in Blue Springs, MO?” After playing the course I now understand why. The course is special. My first impression of the course was that there was a beautiful contrast between the brown/natural color of the Missouri natural grasses surrounding the holes and the pristine, rich and lush greenery of the fairways and greens.
Greg Norman designed the course and did a great job. There is a distinct difference between the two 9’s. The front is basically flat with a lot of mounds, water and sand. The back nine is much more picturesque with many holes adjacent to wooded areas and steep hills – but the individual holes are sculpted around the hills/woods as if they were always there. What separates Stone Canyon from other KC golf courses is the way the course is maintained and groomed. Nary a blade of grass was out of place. And, since I played during the 3rd week of October you would expect fallen leaves to hinder play as it does everywhere in Missouri. Not here. The only leaves were on the trees. The greens and fairways are like a lush green carpet and the roughs were reasonably short so lost balls were kept to a minimum.
The pro shop and restaurant buildings, however, simply do not complement the beauty of the course. They seem to be double-wide trailers that slap you upside your head as you enter the parking lot. But, once you enter the pro shop you are greeted by a very friendly staff. Stone Canyon is one of the top courses in KC.
