Lake View Golf Course

Lakeview Golf Club, Hamilton, Missouri Golf Courses

My Review

As the name implies, Lake View Golf Course in Hamilton, MO, wraps around Hamilton Reservoir so several holes are adjacent to the lake. All have a view. The course is 9 holes and is a competitive length, measuring over 3,118 yards. The fairways, roughs and tees are all comprised of a mix of grasses, cut fairly short. The greens are Bent but many of them have what looks like some sort of cancer infecting them (refer to the picture, which is representative). The course is a great perk for residents of Hamilton and the surrounding area. It is a very nice course in a wonderful setting, although the course isn’t quite as nice as the pictures would indicate.

Grant City Golf Club

My Review

Grant City Golf Club in Grant City, MO is a 9 hole sand green course. Not much to say beyond that, except . . . it is what it is and it provides a needed niche in this community.

Daviess County Country Club

Daviess-County-Country-Club,-Gallatin,-MO-Flag

My Review

Daviess County Country Club is a 9-hole course located in Gallatin, MO. The club’s claim to fame is that PGA Pro Brice Garnett, winner of a 2018 PGA event, hails from this club. When we played, the area had not received a heavy rainfall in a few weeks and, subsequently, the fairways and roughs had been fried. Only the greens and trees were green. And, the greens had some serious issues of their own. Skewed by the smell of raw sewage on the south side of the course and its overall condition, the course is in need of some serious TLC and renovation. But, Daviess County Country Club has the potential of being a great rural community course.

Fremont Hills Country Club

Fremont Hills Country Club, Golf Courses in Springfield, Missouri

My Review

Fremont Hills Country Club in Fremont Hills, MO is basically a suburb of south Springfield. The tees, fairways and greens are in pristine condition. The tees, in particular, are almost perfect and look fake they are so nice. The course is mostly open and therefore very playable. There are a few holes, however, that are VERY narrow, like #17 a short par 4. Almost every hole has homes lining one side of the fairway. And, they are close. It would be great living in one of them. Fremont Hills Country Club is private. But, if you get the chance to play it, jump all over it.

Beaver Valley Golf Club

Beaver-Valley-Golf-Club,-Fredericktown,-MO-Fog

My Review

Formerly named Southern Oaks Country Club, Beaver Valley Golf Club is located in Fredericktown, MO just west of 67. The present owners purchased the 9-hole course in 2018 and have already made great strides in improving its quality. The community has undoubtedly approved of the direction with their pocketbooks . . . membership has increase by 400%. Although, BVGC has a ways to go they are definitely on the right track. The club has a beautiful club house and the course has good bones, with an island green par 3. The greens are small and have fairly significant break, typically from the back to the front. Unless you have a straight uphill putt, these greens are not a pushover. Hazards are minimal, with one bunker and one lake. But, if you live in Fredericktown, you have a nice little course to play and a great community gathering place.

Piney Valley Golf Course

Piney-Valley-Golf-Course,-Ft-Leonard-Wood,-MO--Flag

My Review

Piney Valley Golf Course is located on the Ft. Leonard Wood, MO military base. FLW is primarily an Army base but also provides training for the other major branches. To gain access to Piney Valley, guests need a pass that can be obtained at the visitor’s center right before the entrance check point. The course itself is well manicured, like a private’s haircut, is long (from the blue and white tees) and mostly flat. The only hills are leading to/from the clubhouse. The medium-size greens are in excellent condition, roll true and have minimal break. The fairways have thick zoysia and your ball will sit up very nicely. The fairways do, however, have a few bare spots. The roughs are a bit patchy but are kept at a reasonable length. The tee boxes’ grasses are also in excellent condition. Piney Valley has a lot going for it, particularly if you like golf courses that do not have a lot of flash but provide a good meat and potato golf experience at a very reasonable price.

St. Francois Country Club

St-Francois-Country-Club,-Farmington,-MO-Tee

My Review

Farmington, MO is blessed to have two nice quality golf courses, particularly for a city with a population of less than 20,000. St. Francois Country Club is a private club on the outskirts of the city and, the other course, Crown Pointe, is a public course. StFCC is relatively flat and is very playable because of the quality of grasses. The greens are small to medium size with minimal undulation and roll very true and very quick, running about a 10.5 on the Stimpmeter. The greens are great! Most of the greens are protected by at least one sand trap and water comes into play on a few holes. The course is fairly well manicured and many of the grasses are mowed once a day. All in all, St. Francois CC is nice 18 hole course and, if you have already played Crown Pointe, you should pull a few strings to play it if you are in town.

Excelsior Springs Golf Course

Excelsior Springs Golf Course Missouri Golf Courses

My Review

I last played Excelsior Springs Golf Course in Excelsior Springs, MO in the late 1960’s. It evolved and matured into one of the top 5 courses in the Northland area (at least of the courses I have played to date). Mature trees line the thick and lush fairways and the greens are typically in very nice condition. There are some major changes in store for this proud course: a new clubhouse should be completed by mid 2018. A special thanks to the Excelsior Springs Standard newspaper reporter, Bryce Mereness, who joined me on the front nine. If you haven’t had the chance to play Excelsior Springs Golf Course head up about 15 miles north of Liberty.

Redfield Golf and Country Club

Redfield Golf and Country Club, Golf Courses in Eugene, MO

My Review

As opposed to many courses in the area, Redfield Golf and Country Club in Eugene, MO, is a newer course, built in 2001. Consequently, there are not a lot of mature trees on the course, but the designer did an excellent job of using available natural resources to sculpt an excellent course that is midway between Jeff City and the Lake. Since the course is less than a mile away from Highway 54 it should attract golfers on the way to the Ozarks from the eastern part of Missouri. Most holes are fairly wide open but practically every hole has thick natural grasses lining the fairways and other patches throughout the course. There are large, well-manicured traps on nearly every hole, both in key locations on the fairway and next to the greens. The greens are in excellent condition and are very quick, measuring at around 10 on the stimpmeter. There are also a number lakes on many holes. Redfield Golf and Country Club is an excellent course and can be enjoyed of golfers of all levels. The tips are 6,720 and will provide a good test of your skills if you are a low handicapper.
