Emerald Greens Golf Course
My Review
I loved to play at Emerald Greens Golf Course in St. Louis. Regrettably, the course closed in 2019. But, in honor of this unique course I have left the pictures and our review.
It is an unusual yet reasonably priced golf course and has some very challenging holes. And, as long as you are not spraying the ball too bad you can score well here. The finishing holes are some of the best in St. Louis, and prettiest. Number 18 is one of the premier holes in the city. It is a fun course to play if you like unusual holes, and it has several. It is very walkable except for the half mile between the 9th green and 10th tee box. Play this course if you get the chance, if for no other reason than to play a very unusual course. Creve Coeur Golf Course
My Review
I live a short par 5 away from the first hole of Creve Coeur Golf Course in St. Louis so I have played this course many times. It is a great community course and actually more challenging than you might think. Is it a “must play” course in St. Louis? No. But, if you live in the area and are looking for something to do, go play it. It is also a GREAT course to take your significant other or kids. The one major drawback is that it is sometimes VERY slow but pick the right time and you will be able to play in 90 minutes or less. One major pro is that the course in an excellent value, particularly for Creve Coeur residents. BTW, for those into trivia, Creve Coeur means broken heart in French.
Crescent Farms Golf Club
My Review
I have had the pleasure of playing Crescent Farms Golf Club many times over the past few years. For the money, it is one of the best public courses in St. Louis. It is within a par 5 of 2 other great courses in west St. Louis county, Pevely Farms and Aberdeen. Crescent Farms, designed by famed golf course architect Gary Kern, is a lot of fun to play and offers many different types of holes and challenges. Numbers 9 and 18 are two of the toughest par 4’s on the course. Crescent Farms is little bit of a drive for the average St. Louisan but worth it. Feel free to leave any comments about Crescent Farms Golf Club at the bottom of this page.
Boone Valley Golf Club
My Review
The course is actually very nice with some of the best grasses in the state. But, the grasses are only one aspect of the overall rating. Also factored in are the setting, beauty, uniqueness of the course, condition, overall quality and the professionalism and friendliness of the staff. Boone Valley rates 4 to 4.5 on 6 out of 8 of these factors. Regrettably, they only rate a 1 to 1.5 on the last 2. Hence, only a 3.5 rating. That weighted average gets you every time.
Bogey Hills Country Club
My Review
I have not played Bogey Hills Country Club in many years and, oh my, has it changed. This private course is likely the best kept golf secret in St. Louis. The course could easily compete with any of the top tier courses in St. Louis. But, because it is in St. Charles it does not get the recognition it deserves. Bad for St. Louisans; GREAT for St. Charlesians, and the surrounding communities. If there is not a long wait list to join this club something is wrong.
Bogey Hill Country Club is also as conveniently located as you will find, just to the south of I-70 and Zumbehl. The course has the look and feel of an old school country club with its fairways lined with large, mature trees and it is wonderfully manicured. The club house belies the its 60-year heritage since it was apparently rebuilt a few years ago because of a fire.
There are many white sand traps and mounds in the fairway and surrounding many of the greens. The roughs are a bit long but that could have been only on the day we visited. All of the grasses seem to be in wonderful condition. The large greens run true and have moderate undulation.
Since we were unable to play the entire course we will schedule another visit this fall and complete our review.
The Bogey Club
My Review
The Bogey Club is one of the most exclusive golf clubs in St. Louis, located in the heart of one of St. Louis’s most affluent neighborhoods, Ladue. The Club was originally built in 1911 by Robert Foulis and was redesigned by Roger Null in 2014. While it is one of the most exclusive clubs it is certainly not one of the best golf courses in town. It is well maintained but the course is just too short to compete with most courses in the area; the tips are only 5,826 yards. The Bogey Club partners with Log Cabin Club to provide 18 total holes. This club is not about golf; it is a privilege to belong and the membership is very, very limited to a select number of CEO’s etc. If any of the members are ardent golfers I would assume that they are also members of one of the other golfing country clubs in the city, such as St. Louis Country Club, Old Warson or Bellerive.
Ballwin Golf Course
My Review
Ballwin Golf Course in St. Louis, MO has improved over the past 20 years. In particular, the fairways are much improved with beautiful, thick Zoysia. The greens, too, are looking pretty good. However, I wish the guests would repair their ball marks; there are way too many pock marks on most of the greens. The course is only 9 holes but they are a good, quality 9 holes. I was there at 7 am and the line to check in was long and consistent. This course gets a lot of play and, if I lived closer, I would be one of the regulars.
Algonquin Golf Club
My Review
After having not played Algonquin Golf Club in about 20 years, the course was much better than I remembered. While the course is narrow and fairly short, it is well laid out and you will not feel claustrophobic. As opposed to many courses with limited space, AGC has a driving range . . . and swimming pool . . . and tennis courts . . . and nice club house. The club, however, was still not able to lay the course out to avoid any blind shots to the green. But, even one of the premier courses in St. Louis, St. Louis Country Club, has a couple of blind approach shots, so AGC is in good company. The course is in spectacular condition. All tees, fairways and roughs were in excellent condition and the blue grass roughs were beautiful and mowed to a medium length, so that lost balls, and slower play, will be kept to a minimum. The medium sized-greens too are in stellar condition, have medium complexity with undulation and roll true, even if they are a bit slow. Even the bunkers were well manicured and edged. The layout of the course (short distance from greens to tees) is conducive to walking, however, the fairly steep hills will make it a bit more challenging of a walk. Overall, AGC is a first-class private club and, if you live in the area, you have two wonderful choices of clubs from which to choose, AGC and WCC.
Aberdeen Golf Club
My Review
I like Aberdeen Golf Club in far west St. Louis, Missouri . . . just east of 6 Flags. Fun course to play and reasonably easy. Links style. The back nine is a bit more difficult and windy. A couple of the par 4’s on the back are very difficult to reach in regulation. Many levels of tees. Within a mile of Crescent Farms and Pevely. I always enjoy my round. Aberdeen was designed by Missouri-renowned designer, Gary Kern.
