With a reputation as Columbia’s premier country club, The Club at Old Hawthorne is a no-nonsense private club located a couple of miles east of Columbia. The course doesn’t have much shtik but simply offers pure golf on a beautifully nurtured course. For whatever reason I had a terrible round with one of my highest scores posted in a few weeks. The large, undulating greens posed my biggest challenge, primarily since I had been playing on reasonably slow greens on the previous 6 courses. The greens were actually quite nice; my skill level was the sole culprit. The greens seemed to play much faster than their 9.5 Stimp. The wide lush fairways were lined with beautiful homes, owned by many of Mizzou’s elite. All in all The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri is a wonderful course and club. A special thanks to Mike O’Neill for introducing me to his buddy and Old Hawthorne member Dave Baugher.

This course is a true challenge to a passionate and low handicap player. It is the university of missouri men’s and women’s golf team’s home course, so they made sure to leave it hard. Long par fours, punishing bunkers, and a practice area that competes with the best on tour. Wide fairways can make for a good fairway shot, but you better have good aim as this course has lots of areas from the fairways that don’t offer a good second shot into the green. This course is surrounded by columbia’s nicest homes and will truly make you feel like you’re somewhere special. Don’t pass this gem up if you are given the option to play here.
